We planned a trip to Western Australia with the hope of seeing Southern Right Wales in the waters around Albany and Esperance on the south coast of Western Australia. We also planned some time in and around Perth and the Margaret River Region, along with some boat trips to see Humpback Whales, dolphins, porpoises and hopefully also see kangaroos along the way.
Not long before going we heard about a new programme of “Swimming with Humpback Whales” trips that had started by licenced operators at Ningaloo Reef, near Exmouth in the far North of Western Australia. So all plans were changed to add this into the itinerary!
We flew into Perth and after some time there and on Rottnest island, we took an internal flight up to Exmouth to visit Ningaloo Reef. After flying back to Perth, we hired a car and drove down to Bunbury and Busselton, then spent a day wine-tasting in Margaret River. After that we made a long drive to Albany, into Fitzgerald National Park and finally to Esperance. Our holiday was not long enough to allow us to drive back also, so we took an internal flight back to Perth before finally going to Rockingham. After that, it was the long flight home to London.
We’ve broken the trip down and developed guides for the main wildlife watching areas:
Busselton and surrounding areas
Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef
Fitzgeral River National Park
