We went to Canada on our honeymoon. It was a destination we had both wanted to go and to be honest the date of our wedding day (early May) was planned around the best time to go to Canada! Obviously, out trip was based around seeing as much wildlife as we could, along with time to experience the sights and culture.
We flew into Calgary, Alberta and spent a couple of days getting over the jet-lag (and the exertions of the wedding), doing a bit of shopping and seeing the sights.
We then hired a car and drove up to Banff, joined the incredible Icefield Parkway seeing incredible wildife and scenery through Lake Louise and then on up to Jasper.
After some time in Jasper, we took the overnight VIA Rail train to Vancouver through the Rockies.
After Vancouver, we took a seaplane over to Victoria. In Victoria we did some whale watching and then hired another car to drive to Torfino. Torfino is another whale watching haven. We then drove on up to Part Hardy in the far North of Vancouver Island.
This was to be the grand finale of the trip, we took another very, small seaplane over to Great Bear Lodge in the Great Bear Rainforest. The Great Bear Lodge is a beautiful floating lodge on a lake, that is surrounded by grizzly (and black bears). At this time of year they take you out on boats looking for bears and, back at the lodge, serve great gourmet food.
Following our time with the bears, we took the short flight back to Port Hardy, drove down to Nanaimo for the ferry back to Vancouver and our flight home.
This really was the most amazing trip and just perfect for our honeymoon. We’re just trying to figure out now when we can go back.
We’ve broken down the trip into the main wildlife areas and written guides for each:
Victoria, Vancouver Island
